With the increasing amount of environmental legislation, and even without this the parrallel rise in the need for all businesses to comply and show their customers and shareholders that they act responsibly and are "good to do business with", every business will occasionally need outside help.

Even the top multi-nationals have a policy of engagement of consultants on a regular basis. These are companies that have no shortage of in-house skills, but which also recognise the need for cross-fertilsation and new ideas that external advice from consultancies will bring.

A consultants report, more than any internal review will view your company as others will see you. The independent external assessment produced will often reveal important aspects of the business, risks, and opportunities not perceived in-house.

As time goes on, business life becomes more complex, and the amount of knowledge each company needs to understand how environmental factors will effect their business in all sorts of ways.

For smaller businesses, an outside consultant offers the following advantages:

- Objective advice, not influenced by internal or external political considerations.
- A common frame of reference and best environmantal practices applied within and throughout your industry.
- Models and methodology to gain results more quickly than internal trial and error.
- Permanent training and development of in-house expertise.

The problem, however, choosing the wrong external consultant can create as many problems as it may solve.

- Ask and make sure you obtain references, and find out about the reputation of the consultant through their present and previous clients
- Has the consultant ever direct experience in your field of work and would the team which would work on your project demonstrably also hold those skills
- Personal chemistry and rapport in common aims. Easy to say but not always achieved, is the need to choose a consultant with whom you are sure you can get-on with.
- The Consultant should always act professionally and hold good interpersonal skills.
- Select a consultant that provides you with a proposal that is based on achieving clear business outcomes. Make it clear what you expect the scope of the work to be, and what the product/outcome the consultant is required to produce.
